Venue Info

New London Theatre

The New London Theatre is situated on the corner of Drury Lane and Parker Street in the West End of London, close to Covent Garden tube station. Built in 1973, this sizeable venue hosted the world-premiere of the mega-hit Andrew Lloyd-Webber musical Cats in 1981, which went on to play there for 21 years.

The first production to be staged at the New London Theatre was The Unknown Soldier and his Wife, a drama by Peter Ustinov, which opened on January 10 1973. Among the most notable of the countless shows to have graced the theatre’s stage since then are Grease and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

The site of the current New London Theatre has been occupied by a succession of performing arts venues since the 17th century:  the Mogul of Hindustan, Middlesex Music Hall, the Middlesex Theatre of Varieties and the Winter Garden Theatre.

The New London Theatre is unique in that any type of production can be performed there in any number of ways. The stage, seats and lights can be freely moved as necessary to accommodate the specific staging requirements of a given production.

Although the theatre has a fairly large seating capacity of close to a thousand, the way in which the setting can be manipulated allows the theatre to maintain an intimate atmosphere. Every audience member has a clear, unobstructed view no matter where they are seated in the auditorium.

The layout, size and atmosphere of the New London Theatre make it the perfect place to see theatre performances of all kinds. Recent successes include The Blue Man Group, the RSC’s productions of King Lear and the Seagull, Gone with the Wind – The Musical and War Horse.

Whatever you decide to see at the New London Theatre, we wish you an entertaining and rewarding visit.
