The Peacock Theatre is situated on Portugal Street in the West End of London, close to Holborn tube station.

The first recorded mention of a theatre on the site can be traced back to 1660, when the first woman ever to take to the British stage appeared in Shakespeare’s Othello.

Following several fires during the 19^th century, the theatre was rebuilt in 1911 and named the London Opera House. But due to competition with the Royal Opera House, the New London Opera House was forced to close in 1912.

Changing tack, it re-opened in 1914 as the National Theatre of England and remained as such until 1957 when it was demolished to make way for an office block.

Beaten but unbowed, the theatre’s owners built a 1000 seat theatre in the office basement. Entitled the Royalty Theatre, it opened in 1960. But the scaled-down venue only saw moderate success, drawing small audiences to niche shows.

During the 1970s the London School of Economics took over the theatre as a lecture hall and named it the Peacock Theatre. Sadler’s Wells also sourced the venue as its West End home, meaning that the theatre today has a dual identity, hosting both lectures in the daytime and theatre and dance performances at night.

Among the most notable of the shows to have graced this unusual theatre’s stage during its history are the infamous musical Oh! Calcutta! and a hit production of Bubbling Brown Sugar. The theatre was also used as a TV studio for the long-running light entertainment show This Is Your Life.

Today, the Peacock Theatre enjoys consistent success and is especially well known for staging both classical and modern dance shows.
