The Show

Experience this unforgettable musical and you’ll discover to your delight that you didn’t really know the whole story of the enchanted Land of Oz after all.

There’s never been a better time to catch what the Sunday Telegraph called ‘the hit musical with brains, heart and courage’. Wicked has been voted London's Most Popular Show by theatregoers, winning the Olivier Audience Award for Most Popular Show in 2010.

It's been casting its spell over audiences across the world for a decade now, winning over 90 international awards in total. It continues to be a 'West End sensation' (Daily Mail) at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre, where it played its landmark 3000th performance in autumn 2013.

Wicked was written by Winnie Holzman with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.  It's based on Gregory Maguire's novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which shares its universe with the classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and Oz creator L. Frank Baum's original, classic story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

The Story

Wicked is a contemporary re-imagining of the stories and characters of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, centring on the unlikely but profound friendship between Elphaba and Glinda, two girls who first meet as sorcery students.

You’ll follow their extraordinary adventures in Oz and discover the secret history of how they came to fulfil their destinies as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda The Good. You’ll catch teasing glimpses of legendary characters like the Cowardly Lion - whose destiny won’t be fulfilled until the events of the Wizard of Oz take place – but that’s a different story, for another time.

The outstanding, passionate songs that populate Wicked’s uplifting score include Popular, I'm Not That Girl, What Is This Feeling?, No One Mourns the Wicked and the spine-tingling centrepiece, Defying Gravity.

Take a trip to the Emerald City and prepare to be thoroughly bewitched.

Nothing compares to the thrill you get from getting up-close-and-personal to the sights and sounds of a West End show in full flow, and Wicked is one of London’s best and most popular. On this page you’ll find images from Wicked and get a taste of what’s in store from this spellbinding production.

Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked is the untold story of the witches of Oz, as seen from the perspective of the witches themselves:  Elphaba, the misunderstood girl with green skin and Glinda, the popular blonde. The story follows these two unlikely friends as they grow up to become the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the North.

Take a peek at the current West End production of Wicked in this gallery featuring images of Elphaba played by Rachel Tucker, Glinda played by Gina Beck and the Wonderful Wizard himself played by Keith Bartlett. You can also catch a glimpse of the lavish costumes and magical realm of the Emerald City.

Written by Winnie Holzman with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, Wicked received its public debut in June 2003 at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco before opening on Broadway in October that same year. The musical premiered in London’s West End in September 2006 at the Apollo Victoria Theatre, where it can still be seen today.

Wicked has won over 80 awards worldwide, with international productions taking place in Japan, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Holland and Denmark.

Venue Info

Apollo Victoria Theatre

The Apollo Theatre is situated on Shaftesbury Avenue in the West End of London, close to Piccadilly Circus tube station. Built in 1901, this 775 seat venue was famously named after the Greek and Roman god of music and the arts, Apollo.

The Apollo Victoria Theatre opened with musical comedy The Belle of Bohemia on 21 February 1901. Among the countless notable shows to have graced this venerable West End theatre’s stage since then  are The Sound of Music, Camelot, Fiddler on the Roof and Starlight Express.

Today, the Apollo Victoria Theatre enjoys consistent success and is especially well known for staging lavish, large-scale musicals.

Like any long-serving institution, it’s had its share of ups and downs over the years. After serving as a cinema for a time in the 1930s, the theatre was equipped with a large stage and theatre organ and staged variety shows and special performances by big bands. The theatre closed its doors during WWII but sustained very little damage so was able to reopen in 1941.

Although the theatre remained open during the early 1970s it mainly showed films. It closed for five years in 1976, reopening in 1981 as the Apollo Victoria Theatre. From that point on the theatre has predominantly staged musicals, with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Starlight Express’ running for over 18 years at the theatre.

The layout, size and atmosphere of the Apollo Victoria Theatre make it the perfect place to enjoy the spectacle of larger than life musical theatre. Recent successes include Bombay Dreams, Saturday Night Fever, Movin’ Out and Wicked.

Whatever you decide to see at the Apollo Victoria Theatre, we wish you an entertaining and rewarding visit.
