Russia's award-winning Vakhtangov theatre company brings its groundbreaking interpretation of Anton Chekhov's masterpiece Uncle Vanya to London's West End. 

Lindsay Posner’s star cast, Kate Bassett, Ken Stott, Anna Friel, Samuel West and Laura Carmichael are united together on stage for the first time in one of Anton Chekhov’s undisputed masterpieces, Uncle Vanya. Adapted by Christopher Hampton, Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya blends sparkling wit and earthy humour to brilliant comic effect. 

Rimas Tuminas is one of the most influential directors in Russia and Europe. With this Uncle Vanya he has created a stunningly realised modern interpretation of the play that forsakes the familiar and the domestic for a battlefield of passions, broken illusions and unrealized hopes. Daily life turns imperceptibly into poetry, the drama acquires a tinge of tender irony and every detail on the stage arouses the audience's emotions.

The show won Best Production at Russia’s equivalent to the Emmys, the Golden Mask Awards. It will be performed in Russian with English subtitles.

The Story

Elena, the young, glamorous wife of an elderly Professor, bewitches two friends, Vanya (Ken Scott), brother of the Professor's late first wife, and Astrov (Samuel West) , the local Doctor. Having grown profoundly dissatisfied with their uneventful lives, the impact of Yelena's (Anna Friel) arrival on the pair is seismic.

Sonya (Laura Carmichael), the Professor's daughter by his first wife, knows she is unattractive and is tormented by her unrequited feelings for Astrov. Matters are brought to  crisis-point when the Professor announces plans for his own future that threaten to uproot Vanya and Sonya from their lives and leave them stranded.

As their universe shifts around them they struggle to keep their emotions at bay in this exquisitely evoked comedy of trials and tribulations of the human condition.
