St. James Theatre
St. James Theatre was designed by Foster Wilson Architects and is the first newly built theatre complex in central London in 30 years. It can seat 312 in the main theatre, as well as 100 in the studio theatre.
The theatre’s standout feature is its beautifully sculptured staircase designed by international award winning artist designer, Mark Humphrey. The staircase was crafted in Pietra Santa, by Porcelli Marmi (where Michelangelo’s David was carved) and celebrates the best of British design alongside the elegant Italian craftsmanship.
St. James Theatre is the only theatre in London that has full broadcasting television facilities, enabling shows to be broadcast on BskyB and online, to a massive audience.
Creative Director, Robert Mackintosh had always thought that London Theatre lacked smaller off-Broadway type theatres that seated less than 500 people, which were useful for testing shows before they transferred to the West End. In 1996 when he was producing Joey and Gina’s Wedding, a 200-300 seat venue was needed, which he found impossible to find. They ended up developing the basement of Café Royal on Regent Street where the production ran for one year.
When the opportunity arose to develop a new theatre from scratch on the site of 12 Palace Street, the idea of having a studio space as well as a main theatre was developed, making St James Theatre the perfect destination for live entertainment.
