This latest opera from Glass, his 24th, was commissioned by ENO and Teatro Real Madrid to mark his 75th birthday.
British theatre director Phelim McDermott returns following his spectacular production of Satyagraha for ENO and the Metropolitan Opera, New York, described as ‘transfixing musically and visually’ (The Guardian). The design is by leading international designer Dan Potra, whose work on the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games ceremony was widely acclaimed.
Fresh from his exceptional performance as Mephistopheles in Terry Gilliam’s 2011 Damnation of Faust, acclaimed British baritone Christopher Purves is Walt Disney, while soprano Janis Kelly creates the role of Disney’s studio nurse and confidante.
The Story
Based on Peter Stephan Jungk’s novel and written by Philip Glass, one of the world’s most important composers, The Perfect American imagines the final years of Walt Disney’s life, as narrated by Wilhelm Dantine, who worked for Disney in the ’40s and ’50s. You'll get a glimpse into Walt's world, featuring mythical imaginings of Abraham Lincoln and Andy Warhol.
If at first Walt seems to have a magic wand that grants him all his wishes, we soon discover that he’s every bit as tortured as the anguished Dantine who recounts the story.

The threesixty Theatre is situated within Kensington Gardens in Hyde Park, close to High Street Kensington tube station. This new outdoor venue was purpose-built to house its current production, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.
This unusual circular space seats 1480 people and is built in a 'theatre-in-the-round' format. This means it has fewer rows and thus creates a more intimate theatrical experience. The spacious, newly constructed theatre tent has been carefully designed so that sound travels to all corners - and it allows lots of leg room for taller visitors too.
The threesixty Theatre is weather-proofed, so there’s zero possibility of the show being a washout, regardless of what weather conditions the notoriously unpredictable British summer may bring.
Both the inner auditorium and the imposing external structure from which it is suspended are carefully designed to allow everyone in attendance a 360 degree view, with none of the sight obstructions associated with tent-poles in traditional circus or theatre tents.
The cupola of the tent (that’s ‘roof’ to the likes of us) contains ten tons of technical equipment, including lights, sound and air conditioning. This element of the structure takes an entire day to build before the main tent goes up.
The theatre is located in historic Kensington Gardens. This area was once part of an extended Hyde Park that King Henry VIII used for deer chasing.
In the 17th century, husband-and-wife monarchs William III and Mary II took the throne and bought the home that became Kensington Palace, which they complemented with the most exquisitely beautiful gardens imaginable. The gardens were handed down through generations of the Royal Family and gradually turned into the park we see today.
Whilst visiting the threesixty Theatre, stop and take a look at the gardens’ beautiful features, which include the famous bronze statue of Peter Pan, the Italian Gardens, the Albert Memorial and the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Playground.
The layout, size and unique location of the threesixty Theatre add a very real sense of enchantment to the magical The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
