Noel Coward Theatre
The Noël Coward Theatre is situated on St Martin's Lane in the West End of London, close to Leicester Square tube station. Built in 1903, this 886 seat venue once presented a piece by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, which closed after just 32 performances.
The first production at the Noël Coward Theatre was Rosemary by Louis N. Parker, which opened on March 12 1903. Among the most notable of the countless shows to have graced this venerable West End theatre’s stage since then are Noël Coward’s first play I’ll Leave it to You, George Bernard Shaw’s St Joan, Children of a Lesser God and A Month in the Country.
Originally called the New Theatre, this distinguished institution has a very rich history. During WWII the theatre acted as a base for the Sadler’s Wells and Old Vic companies when their own theatres were damaged. The theatre was renamed The Albery Theatre in 1973 to honour Bronson Albery, who managed the theatre’s fortune for many years.
In 2005 the lease for the theatre was granted to Delfont-Mackintosh Theatres. Major restructuring has taken place in the theatre since then, including re-carpeting, new seats, rebuilding of the balcony, extension of the backstage area and the restoration of the stalls bar to its original size. The theatre was constructed without columns, so a clear and uninterrupted view is available to all audience members no matter where they are sitting in the auditorium.
The layout, size and atmosphere of the Noël Coward Theatre make it the perfect place to see large scale dramas or high energy musicals and comedies. Recent successes include Celebration, A Christmas Carol, Avenue Q, Calendar Girls, Enron, Death Trap, Million Dollar Quartet and Gatz.
Whatever you decide to see at the Noël Coward Theatre, we wish you an entertaining and rewarding visit.
