Cheap Robert Le Diable tickets at the Royal Opera House

The Show

Giacomo Meyerbeer’s Robert Le Diable opened at the Paris Opéra in 1831 to unanimous praise. The show’s combination of romance, supernatural and grand spectacle pleased the tastes of the late 19th century French public. The opera made Giacomo Meyerbeer the star composer of the period.

Robert Le Diable not onlyinitiated the European fame of Meyerbeer but also consolidated the fame of the librettist Scribe. The 1831 production launched the reputation of the new director of the Paris Opéra, Louis-Désiré Véron, as a pioneer of a new genre of opera. The influence of the performance even extended to the ballet and literary worlds whereRobert Le Diablewas frequently referred to.

However, by the 20th century, Robert Le Diable had fallen out of fashion and was rarely performed. This exciting new staging by prolific director Laurent Pelly brings the classic work to Covent Garden for the first time in 122 years.

The Story

Pelly’s production is heavily influenced by the art and architecture of the Middle Ages. The show presents a world of jousting tournaments, carousing knights, courtly dances and supernatural visions. The action is centred on a battle, sung in tender duets, between good and evil portraying Robert's genuine love for Isabelle which is threatened by the menacing influence of the deceptively charming Bertram.

Meyerbeer's score is impressively large, ranging from introspective arias to grand ensembles and choruses. Particularly beautiful moments to watch out for include Alice’s poignant aria in Act I, a macabre ballet of ghostly nuns in Act III and the final, passionate ensemble of Act V, as Alice and Bertram fight for Robert’s soul.
