The Show

Winner of 2 2014 Olivier Awards including Best Actress in a Musical and Outstanding Achievement in Music

Once is based on the 2006 Irish musical film of the same name, written and directed by John Carney. It has been brillliantly adapted from stage to screen by Enda Walsh and retains much of the films original Grammy-nominated soundtrack written by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, including the hit song 'Falling Slowly', which recieved a 2007 Accademy Award for Best Original Song.

Once opened on Broadway in February 2012 and went on to win an amazing eight awards at the 2012 Tony Awards ceremony. Among the plaudits were Best New Musical and Best Actor. The show also picked up the Drama League Award for distinguished production of a musical for 2011-2012. Zrinka Cvitešić won the 2014 Olivier Award for her performance as Girl in the present West End production.

The Story

An Irish musician and a Czech immigrant are drawn together by their shared love of music. Over the course of one fateful week, their unexpected friendship and collaboration evolves into a powerful but complicated romance, heightened by the raw emotion of the songs they create together.

Brought to the stage by an award-winning team of visionary artists and featuring an ensemble cast of gifted actor/musicians, Once is a musical celebration of life and love: thrilling in its originality, daring in its honesty... and unforgettable in every way.

Venue Info

Phoenix Theatre

image

The Phoenix Theatre is situated on Charing Cross Road in the West End of London, close to Tottenham Court Road tube station. Built in 1930, this 1000 seat venue has been the site for Blood Brothers since 1991.

The first production at the Phoenix Theatre was Noel Coward’s classic comedy of manners Private Lives, which opened on September 24 1930. Among the countless notable  shows to have graced this venerable West End theatre’s stage since then are Love for Love, The Browning Version, The Canterbury Tales and Night and Day.

The site of the current theatre was originally occupied by a factory and subsequently a Music Hall. Today, the theatre enjoys consistent success and is especially well known for staging musicals, with major works by Steven Sondheim, Willy Russell and Stephen Swartz having played there over the years.

The Phoenix Theatre has had its share of ups and down over the years, as might be expected from any long-serving institution. Private Lives, its opening production, had been a huge success, ditto the production that followed it, Late Night Final.

However, despite this promising start the theatre quickly lost steam. It reopened as a variety hall, but the change of tack did little to reverse its ailing fortunes. It took the Master to set things on track again. Noel Coward returned to the Phoenix in 1936 and audiences duly came back in droves.

In the 1950s the theatre experienced a major triumph with Canterbury Tales, which ran for over 2000 performances. In more recent times, Blood Brothers, Willy Russell’s phenomenally successful  musical spin on the Corsican Brothers, transferred from the Noel Coward Theatre to the Phoenix in 1991 and ran until 2012.

We wish you an entertaining and rewarding visit to the Phoenix Theatre.
