Cheap Memphis tickets at the Shaftesbury Theatre

The Show

Fresh from her stellar West End success in The Bodyguard, Beverley Knight stars in Memphis, the multi-award-winning musical that’s been a smash hit on Broadway and on a triumphant 55-city North American tour.

With original songs by Grammy® winner and Bon Jovi co-founder David Bryan, and a gripping true-life-inspired story by writer Joe DiPietro, the explosive blend of electrifying music, soaring emotion and roof-raising energy that makes up Memphis will leave you exhilarated.

The Story

Winner of four Tony Awards including Best Musical, Memphis centres on Felicia, a black singer whose career is on the rise but who can't break out of the segregated clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee.

She meets Huey, a white radio DJ whose love of music transcends race lines and airwaves. When the two collaborate, her soulful music reaches radio audiences everywhere, and the Golden Era of early rock 'n' roll takes flight. But as things start to heat up, they discover that the world may really not be ready for their music - or their love.

Venue Info

Shaftesbury Theatre

The Shaftesbury Theatre is situated on Shaftesbury Avenue in the West End of London, close to Tottenham Court Road tube station. Built in 1911, this 1400 seat venue is the last theatre (of six) to have been built on Shaftesbury Avenue.

The first production at the Shaftesbury Theatre was The Three Musketeers, which opened on December 26 1911. Among the countless notable shows to have graced this venerable West End theatre’s stage since then are Carmen, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, Hair, West Side Story, Carousel, Tommy and Rent.

Today, the Shaftesbury Theatre enjoys consistent success and is especially renowned for staging large scale musicals.

Like any long-serving institution it’s experienced its fair share of ups, downs and changes over the years. Still operating under its original title of the New Prince’s Theatre, the venue underwent extensive modification in the early 1960s and, under the new management of Charles Clore and EMI, was renamed the Shaftesbury Theatre in 1962.

In 1973 part of the ceiling fell in during a performance of Hair, forcing the closure of the long running production. After restoration work, the theatre reopened in 1974.

British farceur Ray Cooney formed the Theatre of Comedy company in 1983 and took out a lease on the Shaftesbury Theatre. Run For Your Wife was the first of Cooney’s shows to be staged at the Shaftesbury, followed by a season of works that exemplified British stage comedy at its finest. Revenues from this massively successful season enabled the Theatre of Comedy to purchase the Shaftesbury outright in 1984.

In 2006 a major overhaul began, in which the entire auditorium was re-carpeted, new seats were installed and the front of house areas were redecorated. The theatre reopened in October 2007.

The layout, size and atmosphere of the Shaftesbury Theatre make it the perfect place to see large-scale musicals. Recent successes include Daddy Cool, Fame, Hairspray, Derren Brown Svengali and Rock of Ages.

Whatever you decide to see at the Shaftesbury Theatre, we wish you an entertaining and rewarding visit.
