Novello Theatre Seat Plan
Choose your seats from the plan of the Novello Theatre above. If you're making your first visit to a theatre or you're simply unsure about where you'd most like to be seated, here's a quick guide to help you choose:
The Stalls are level with and closest to the stage. The Dress Circle (or simply the Circle) is the level of seating above the Stalls. The Upper Circle or Grand Circle is above the Dress Circle. The Balcony, above the Upper Circle, is the highest level of seating.
The Novello Theatre is situated on Aldwych in the West End of London, close to Covent Garden tube station. Built in 1905, this 1015 seat venue continued to host plays despite being bombed during WWII.
The first production at the Novello Theatre was Il Maestro di Capella, an Opera by Ferdinand Paer, which opened on May 22 1905. Among the countless notable shows to have graced this venerable West End theatre’s stage since then are Sailor Beware!, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, No Sex Please We’re British, The Real Thing and Cabaret.
Today, the Novello Theatre enjoys consistent success and is internationally renowned as a great place to see plays and musicals as well as being a regular host to performances by the Royal Shakespeare Company.
The theatre has progressed through many aliases during its history, having been variously known as The Waldorf Theatre, the Whitney Theatre, and The Strand Theatre before settling on its current appellation.
Like any long-serving institution, its fortunes have varied over the years. An extensive reconstruction was carried out in 1930, with the entire theatre being redecorated and the dress circle rear boxes removed. Despite being badly damaged in the Blitz, the theatre stayed open for business during WWII.
The theatre was renovated during the 1970s. Still known as the Strand, the theatre underwent further major refurbishment in 2005. When work was completed in December of that year, the theatre reopened as the Novello Theatre.
The layout, size and atmosphere of the Novello Theatre make it the perfect place to see musicals and contemporary and classical theatre. Recent successes include Spring Awakening, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Tap Dogs, Onassis, Betty Blue Eyes, Crazy For You, Noises Off and Derren Brown: Svengali.
Whatever you decide to see at the Novello Theatre, we wish you an entertaining and rewarding visit.
