Cheap La Bohème tickets at the Royal Opera House

The Show

Composer, Giacomo Puccini’s four-act opera was written to accompany the Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. The show, which is based on Scènes De La Vie de Bohème, by Henri Murger premiered in Turin in 1896 at the Teatro Regio.

Following this first performance, La Bohème was not met with particular enthusiasm, but its fortunes almost immediately changed. The performance was conducted by the young Arturo Toscanini, who later went on to conduct La Bohème for the NBC Symphony Orchestra in 1946.

Since the late 19th century, La Bohème has become part of the standard Italian opera repertory and is the fourth most frequently performed opera worldwide. It was first performed in Covent Garden in 1897 and has had over 500 performances in London since.

The Story

Puccini's romantic depiction of bohemian Paris, with memorable music and a love story based on the lives of everyman characters, has enchanted audiences worldwide, making La Bohème one of the best-loved operas of all time.

British opera director, John Copley recreates Paris in the 1830s. The audience see the lively Latin Quarter, where traders sell their goods as well as a drafty attic where impoverished artists live. The plot’s love story featuring Rodolfo and Mimi is movingly expressed through Puccini's score, from start to finish. Emotional intensity is contrasted with the colourful spectacle of the Café Momus and surrounding streets, which present a cross-section of Parisian society in all its noise and vibrancy. La Bohème presents 19th-century Paris on the stage in vividly enthralling detail.
