The Show

Jesus Christ Superstar first came to major theatres when it debuted on Broadway in October 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York. The Broadway production ran for 720 performances, closing two years later after grossing £2.8 million at the box office, and Andrew Lloyd Webber won the prestigious Drama Desk Award as Most Promising Composer for Jesus Christ Superstar in 1972.

Less than 12 months after the Broadway show opened, the rock spectacle came to London, exploding onto the West End at the Palace Theatre in August 1972 in a hugely successful production directed by Jim Sharman and starring Paul Nicholas singing the part of Jesus.
By 1980, after 3,358 performances, Jesus Christ Superstar had become the longest running musical in West End history at the time and grossed £7.5 million.

Two decades later, Jesus Christ Superstar received its first blessing from the Vatican when a production by Massimo Romeo Piparo’s Peep Arrow company was endorsed by the Vatican’s official 2000 Jubilee Programme. Songs from the show were performed in front of Pope John Paul II in Rome during the Jubilee in May of that year.

The Story

The second leg of the first ever UK arena tour of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's legendary rock classic Jesus Christ Superstar is a major musical event with an all-star cast.

Loosely based on the Gospels, Jesus Christ Superstar is a respectful but rousing musical retelling of the deeply eventful last week in the life of Jesus.

When Jesus’ disciple Judas Iscariot starts to worry about Jesus’ growing reputation as the Son of God, he warns Jesus not to raise the anger of the Roman Empire. But Jesus doesn’t do as he asks, and is led to his downfall at the hands of the evil King Herod.

Venue Info

Manchester Arena

The Manchester Arena is situated at Victoria Station near the Printworks in central Manchester. Built in 1995, this 21,000 seat venue was a joint design venture by companies DLA Ellerbe Beckett, Ove Arup & Partners and Austin-Smith: Lord.

On the Manchester Arena’s opening night, 15,000 spectators watched Olympic Gold Medal-winners Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean perform on the ice. The event was the best-attended ice-skating performance of all time. Among the many notable personalities to have graced the Arena’s stage since then are Lady Gaga, Kylie Minogue, boxer Amir Khan and Lee Evans.

Today, the Manchester Arena enjoys consistent success and is one of the major centres in the North in which to see touring musicals, big-name music concerts and a wide range of sporting events.

The venue attracts over one million visitors each year and was named International Venue of the Year in 2002. That same year, U2 played at the Arena in front of 19,384 fans - the biggest audience on their European Elevation Tour. Lead singer Bono declared the Arena to be the best venue in the country following the band’s performance.

In 2010 the Arena held its 15th anniversary party, which included performances by Alexandra Burke, Pixie Lott, Beverley Knight, The Saturdays and Peter Kay.

The layout, size and atmosphere of the Manchester Arena make it the perfect place to see rock and pop gigs, stand-up comedy and children’s events. Recent successes include Morrissey, the UK tour of Jesus Christ Superstar and Disney on Ice: Passport to Adventure.

Whatever you decide to see at the Manchester Arena, we wish you an entertaining and rewarding visit.
