Hull New Theatre
The Hull New Theatre is situated on Kingston Square in the city of Hull, close to Hull Central rail station. Designed by architects W. B. Wheatley and Robert Cromie, this 1,200 seat venue opened in 1939 with a performance of Noel Gay's Me and My Girl.
The original idea for the theatre sprang from the mind of 1930s entrepreneurPeppino Santangelo, who decided to create a place where ordinary people could go to see theatre productions.
Shortly after it was built, the building took a direct hit from an enemy bomb during WWII that demolished two auditorium doors, the front row of the stalls and the props and costumes of the Sadler's Wells Opera Company who were resident at the theatre at the time.
A further threat posed the theatre in the 1960s when developers wanted to turn it into a bingo hall. As a result, Hull City Council bought the theatre and the Kingston upon Hull Theatre Company was formed as the resident production company.
Among the notable shows to have graced the theatre’s stage during the last few years are The Winter’s Tale, The Importance of Being Earnest, Message for Margaret and The Ladykillers on tour.
Today, the Hull New Theatre enjoys consistent success and has established an excellent reputation for staging touring musicals, local productions and children’s shows. It remains true to its original mission - to make theatre more accessible to people from all walks of life and financial strata - and has become known as one of the best regional theatres in the country.
The layout, size and atmosphere of the Hull New Theatre make it the perfect place to see touring musicals, home-grown productions and entertainment for all ages. Recent successes include Calendar Girls, Beauty and the Beast on Ice and the touring production of Starlight Express.
Whatever you decide to see at the Hull New Theatre, we wish you an entertaining and rewarding visit.
