Venue Info

Arts Theatre

image

The Arts Theatre is situated on Great Newport Street in the West End of London, close to Leicester Square tube station. Built in 1913, this intimate 350 seat venue is known for its history of alternative and sometimes controversial productions.

The theatre was initially intended as a club for people interested in all things theatrical, both public and professional, with a small, functional auditorium sufficient to allow them to indulge their fancies. The first production was Picnic, a revue by Herbert Farjeon, which opened on April 20 1927.

Among the countless noteworthy shows to have graced this venerable West End theatre’s stage during its long history since then are the premiere of the English-language production of Waiting for Godot, Saturday Night, The Vagina Monologues, Close to Heaven, A Christmas Carol and The Complete World of Sports.

During the 1940s the venue was dubbed a 'mini National Theatre' due to its penchant for discovering innovative drama. Today, the Arts Theatre enjoys consistent success, and has a solid reputation for staging new plays that push artistic boundaries, and for supporting undiscovered playwrights.

But, like any long-serving institution, its fortunes have varied over the years. Despite the theatre’s success it faced a serious threat of demolition in 2006. Nevertheless, the Arts Theatre continues to function today as the West End's smallest commercial theatre, to the delight of its many patrons.

The layout, size and atmosphere of the Arts Theatre make it the perfect place to see exciting new drama and the occasional theatre classic. It is wonderfully intimate. Recent successes include Naked Boys Singing, Park Avenue and A Guide to Sexual Misery.

Whatever you decide to see at the Arts Theatre, we wish you an entertaining and rewarding visit.
