Sheffield Motorpoint Arena
The Sheffield Motorpoint Arena is situated on Broughton Lane in the centre of Sheffield, close to Darnall rail station. Opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1991, it was constructed at a cost of £34 million.
The first show to be performed at the Sheffield Motorpoint Arena featured legendary singer/songwriter Paul Simon, then undertaking his Born At The Right Time tour. Since then, the venue has become a regular haunt for artists of a similar stature playing tour dates in the region.
Among the most notable of the countless music acts to have graced this northern Arena’s stage are Rihanna, Leona Lewis, Beyonce, Elton John, Peter Andre, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Rod Stewart, David Bowie and Kylie Minogue to name just a few.
Today, the Sheffield Motorpoint Arena enjoys consistent success and has established a solid reputation for hosting touring productions and the biggest names in comedy and music.
The Arena has the distinction of being the first venue of its size to host the timeless musical Les Misérables. The show ran for an impressive 35 performances during four-weeks in May and June 1999. In order to create an appropriate environment for the musical, the Arena underwent a transformation which included the creation of an intimate theatre-style setting that held 3000 people. Thousands of square metres of drapes and carpet were used to create an intimate auditorium using a small section of the Arena’s overall seating capacity.
The layout, size and atmosphere of the Sheffield Motorpoint Arena make it the perfect place to see rock and pop concerts, children’s performances and touring musicals. Recent successes include George Michael, Disney on Ice presents Passport to Adventures and Jesus Christ Superstar.
Whatever you decide to see at the Sheffield Motorpoint Arena, we wish you an entertaining and rewarding visit.
