Cheap Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the Theatre Royal
Roald Dahl's deliciously dark tale of young Charlie Bucket and the mysterious confectioner Mr Willy Wonka comes to life in a brand new West End musical directed by Academy Award® winner Sam Mendes and starring Douglas Hodge as Willy Wonka, with Nigel Planer as Grandpa Joe,
A chocolate garden, an army of squirrels and the curiously peculiar Oompa-Loompas must be believed to be seen in this spectacular new musical that's choc-full of fantastical treats to dazzle your senses. Faithful to Dahl's tale and presented on a mind-blowingly grand scale, 'Charlie' is utterly spectacular but also refreshingly human. Kids of all ages will love it.
Mr. Willy Wonka, the eccentric owner of the greatest chocolate factory in the world, has decided to open the doors of his factory to five lucky children and their parents. In order to choose who will enter the factory, Mr. Wonka devises a plan to hide five golden tickets beneath the wrappers of his famous chocolate bars.
The search for the five golden tickets is fast and furious but Charlie Bucket, the unsuspecting hero, defies all odds by claiming the fifth and final ticket. A poor but virtuous boy, Charlie lives in a tiny house with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bucket, and all four of his grandparents. The golden ticket sends Charlie and his Grandpa Joe on a spectacular adventure beyond either of their wildest imaginations.

Drury Lane Theatre Royal
The Theatre Royal Drury Lane is situated on Catherine Street in the West End of London, close to Covent Garden tube station. Built in 1812, this 2200 seat venue has impressive décor and a distinctive façade featuring Greek-inspired columns.
The current Theatre Royal Drury Lane is the fourth theatre to have been built on the present site since 1663. The first opened on May 7 of that year, but was destroyed by a fire in 1672. The second theatre to be built opened in 1674 and hosted many successful productions before being demolished in 1791.
The third theatre opened in 1794 after three years of construction. Despite supposedly being fireproof, it burned down in 1809.The current Theatre Royal Drury Lane opened in 1812.
Today, the Theatre Royal Drury Lane enjoys consistent success and is one of the most important theatres in English history. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries the theatre staged a number of hugely popular shows, including annual pantomimes starring legendary actors of the era including Dan Leno and Will Evans, and plays featuring such exalted names as Ellen Terry and Henry Irving.
In 1922 the theatre’s interior was completely reconstructed. It is said that the refurbishments cost more than £100 000, a very substantial amount of money for the time. During WWII the venue served as the headquarters of the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA). From the ‘50s to the present day it has largely adhered to a policy of staging large-scale musical productions.
The layout, size and atmosphere of the Theatre Royal Drury Lane make it the perfect place to see grand musical or dance productions. Recent successes include The Producers, Lord of the Rings, Oliver! and Shrek the Musical.
Whatever you decide to see at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, we wish you an entertaining and rewarding visit.
