Cheap Another Country at Trafalgar Studios 1

The Show

What would  lead a man to betray his country? What would lead a boy to betray his friends? These questions become fatally entwined at the Chichester Festival Production of Another Country by Julian Mitchell, dirceted by Jeremy Herrin and designed by Peter Mackintosh.

The play won the Olivier Award for Play of the Year and helped launch the careers of Kenneth Branagh, Daniel Day- Lewis, Rupert Everett and Colin Firth.

The Story

Another Country follows a company of public schoolboys through a summer terms in the early 1930s where Bennett and Judd are both outsiders; one coming to terms with his homosexuality, the other already a committed Marxist.

But the Establishment has tradtional ways of dealing with rebels and when a scandal rocks the school, the young men must confront their beliefs and make choices which will have a momentous impact on their lives and on the future of their country.

Another Country balances subtle wit and thought-provoking drama in a fictionalised account of the youth of real-world notables including the spy Guy Burgess and the Communist John Cornford, who died in the Spanish Civil War.

Venue Info

Trafalgar Studio One

The Trafalgar Studios are situated in London’s Whitehall, close to Charing Cross rail and tube station. Built in 1930, the two studios—Studio 1 with 380 seats and Studio 2 with 100 seats—had originally been a single auditorium before they were converted in the early 2000s.

The Trafalgar Studios originally opened as the Whitehall Theatre on September 29 1930 with a play by Walter Hackett called The Way to Treat a Woman. The theatre later became closely identified with Brian Rix’s Whitehall Farces, which began playing there in the 1950s and continued through to the end of the 1960s.

By the end of the 1970s new owner Paul Raymond had turned the theatre, without permission, into a military museum for tourists called The Theatre Of War. Raymond got into severe trouble with Westminster Council.  An inquiry followed, which has ultimately led to the preservation of the theatre, and other London theatres, since then.

Between 1997 and 1999 the theatre served as a radio and television studio. The BBC’s Live from London and Jack Docherty’s talk show were both broadcast from here during this time. It later returned to theatrical use.

In 2003 the space was converted into The Trafalgar Studios. This involved splitting the theatre into two separate auditoriums. Studio One occupies the space that was once the dress circle. It is the larger of the two spaces and opened a year prior to Studio Two.

The layout, size and atmosphere of the Trafalgar Studios One make it the perfect place to see plays and musicals in an intimate environment. Recent successes include End of the Rainbow, Ordinary Days, Being Shakespeare, Top Girls, Three Days in May and Yes, Prime Minister.

Whatever you decide to see at the Trafalgar Studio One, we wish you an entertaining and rewarding visit.
