Lee Evans and Sheila Hancock will star in Clive Exton’s new comedy Barking In Essex, which is scheduled to premiere at Wyndham’s Theatre on Monday 16 September 2013, following previews from 6 September.
Evans will play dim-witted small-time criminal Darnley, with Hancock as his Rottweilerish mother Emmie.
Aside from being one of the UK’s best-loved stand-up comedians, Evans has a highly successful parallel career as an actor. His previous West End credits include The Producers at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, Endgame at the former Albery Theatre (now the Noël Coward) and The Dumb Waiter at Trafalgar Studios.
Sheila Hancock’s recent London stage appearances include The Last of the Duchess at the Hampstead Theatre, Sister Act at the London Palladium and The Birthday Party at the Lyric Hammersmith.
Exton is the writer of Poirot, Jeeves and Wooster and the acclaimed 10 Rillington Place.
Barking In Essex tells the story of 'Essex’s most notorious gangster' Algie Packer, who’s just done seven years inside and is coming home to collect his booty - £3,672,000 in untraceable notes. But Algie’s family have forgotten to mention something rather important, and desperately attempt to cover their tracks before Algie arrives to collect what’s rightfully his.
Barking In Essex is directed by The Dumb Waiter and The Leisure Society’s Harry Burton. Casting is by Anne Vosser. The producers are Michael Edwards and Carole Winter for MJE Productions.
