Alex Gaumond and Kay Murphy (pictured) will join the London cast of Matilda The Musical at the West End's Cambridge Theatre from 3 September.
Olivier Award-nominated Gaumond will take on the role of horrible headmistress Miss Trunchbull, who throws her students in the 'chokey' at every opportunity. The part was originated by Bertie Carvel, who is now playing the character on Broadway. Murphy will play Matilda’s dreadful mother, Mrs Wormwood.
Gaumond's West End credits Top Hat at the Aldwych Theatre and We Will Rock You atthe Dominion Theatre. Murphy has previously appeared in productions including Chicago at the Adelphi Theatre, La Cage Aux Folles at the Menier Chocolate Factory and The Tailor Made Man at the Arts Theatre.
Based on Roald Dahl’s much-loved children's story, the RSC-originated production of Matilda is about a five year old girl who discovers an extraordinary power which could be her saving grace in a world full of ghastly grown-ups.
Tim Minchin’s music and lyrics and Bafta-nominated writer Dennis Kelly’s script have made this show a huge hit in both the UK and US.
Matilda the Musical wiped the floor at the 2012 Olivier Awards and went on to bag a further four gongs at the Tony Awards.
