The Revival of Stephen Sondheim musical Merrily We Roll Along has extended its run by two weeks at the Menier Chocolate Factory. The musical was originally due to close on 23 February 2013, but is now playing until 9 March.
The current West End production is directed by Maria Friedman and stars Damian Humbley (The Last 5 Years; Little Shop of Horrors) as Charley Kringas, Olivier award winner and Tony nominee Jenna Russell (Sunday in the Park with George) as Mary Flynn and Mark Umbers (Sweet Charity) as Franklin Shepard. Olivier nominee Josefina Gabrielle (Sweet Charity) returns to the Menier to play the role of Gussie Carnegie along with Glyn Kerslake (Road Show) who plays Joe Josephson.
The musical charts the turbulent relationship between three friends, Franklin, Charley and Mary, over three decades. Starting in 1980 and travelling backwards in time, it features songs including ‘Good Thing Going’, ‘Not a Day Goes By’ and ‘Old Friends’.
Merrily We Roll Along has a book by George Furth and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It is based on the 1934 book of the same name by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. After 52 previews, the Broadway production, directed by Prince ran for 16 performances.
However, since then it has had many revivals including a Michael Grandage production, which played in 2000 at the Donmar Warehouse. It had 71 performances and won Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Musical, Best Actor and Best Actress.
