The Book of Mormon has this week made West End and Broadway history for the biggest-ever single day of sales, after taking £2,107,972 at the box office.
In response to unprecedented demand, last week 150,000 extra tickets were released and booking extended at the Prince of Wales Theatre until 11 January 2014.
Mega-producer Cameron Mackintosh, who owns the Prince of Wales Theatre, said of the shows box office success: "After a phenomenal opening night I am delighted to see a phenomenal record-breaking post-opening box office of over £2million. The Mormons have truly delivered a Heavenly hit!"
The Book of Mormon tells the story of two earnest young Mormon missionaries, Elder Kevin Price and Elder Arnold Cunningham. Dispatched to small-town Uganda to spread the word of the Latter Day Saints, they’re smacked in the face by culture shock and wind up in a showdown with a tyrannical warlord.
The Book of Mormon is the brainchild of South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and Robert Lopez of Avenue Q. It stars Gavin Creel and Jared Gertner as Elder Price and Elder Cunnigham respectively.
