West Side Story will embark on a UK tour in September after it finishes its limited run at the Sadler’s Wells from 7 August until 22 September.
West Side Story is returning to Sadler’s Wells to celebrate the venue’s 15th anniversary season and will be directed and choreographed by Joey McKneely.
The tour will kick off at the Liverpool Empire on September 24, before visiting the Sunderland Empire, the New Wimbledon Theatre and the Milton Keynes Theatre. It is currently touring until June, 2014.
Based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story is set against New York street gang rivalry in the mid-1950s. Riff is the leader of the Jets. His best friend, ex-Jet Tony, meets Sharks leader Bernardo's younger sister Maria at a dance and its love and first sight.
Maria and Tony meet in secret and plan to run away. But the Sharks and the Jets stage a rumble under the highway, with the winning gang gaining control of the streets. In a desperate attempt to end the violence Maria sends Tony to break up the meeting, but everything goes terribly wrong...
