The highly anticipated premiere of new Spice Girls musical Viva Forever! took place at the West End’s Piccadilly Theatre this Tuesday, 11 December.
Spice Girls Victoria Beckham, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton, Melanie Brown and Geri Halliwell all attended the premiere, which attracted more stars than a West End opening's seen in a long time. Among them were Posh's proud hub David Beckham, Joan Collins, Dawn French, Holly Willoughby, Barbara Windsor, Cilla Black and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
All five Spices took to the stage at the end of the show, standing hand-in-hand as they offered tributes to the musical’s creative team. “There are so many people to thank,” gushed an excited Mel C, “but the people I'd like to thank most are the wonderful cast.”
Bunton paid tribute to the show's writer, Jennifer Saunders. In typically saucy style Mel B opted to say a few words that perhaps weren’t quite suitable for the children in the audience, which prompted Victoria Beckham to hide her head in her hands.
The Artist Formerly Known As Ginger Spice, Geri Halliwell, praised producer Judy Craymer. "We love you Judy," Halliwell said. "Thank you for making the Spice Girls dream come true!"
The show has received mixed reviews, but those who liked it loved it. Ex-Radio One DJ Chris Moyles, recently seen as King Herod in the UK tour of Jesus Christ Superstar, tweeted: "Just been to see @vivaforever. Brilliant cast, great show. All the Spice Girls were there too! Woop!".
Viva Forever! is a feel-good fable about the ups and downs faced by a mum and her daughter Viva after Viva enters a TV reality singing contest. The show features sixteen of the Spice Girls’ biggest hits, including Wannabe, Say You’ll Be There, Mama, Stop and title song Viva Forever!.
