The Sharks and The Jets are coming to London, when West Side Story returns to Sadler’s Wells next year for the venue’s 15th anniversary season.
Based on the Shakespeare classic Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story will play at the famous dance venue from 7 August to 22 September 2013. Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim’s musical was last seen at the venue in 2008 in a production celebrating its 50th anniversary.
The show is packed with unforgettable songs including Maria, Tonight, Somewhere, America and I Feel Pretty. West Side Story has been described as "a masterpiece of musical theatre" by the Daily Mail and "a musical landmark" by the Guardian.
Joey McKneely’s vibrant production features Jerome Robbins’ original choreography, and a cast that has garnered accliam for its unflagging energy and technical brilliance. Celebrated conductor and composer Donald Chan leads the orchestra through Bernstein’s iconic score.
Other shows in the newly announced season at Sadler’s Wells include Flamenco Festival London (15-27 March), the 10th anniversary of Breakin’ Convention (4-6 May), Some Like It Hip Hop (3 May-30 June) and Ballet Revolucion (6-23 March).
